Puerto Banús is the part of Marbella most people picture first: superyachts on the quay, designer boutiques and terraces that stay busy long after midnight.

This is our Puerto Banús guide: the story of the marina, the rooftops and beach clubs we book most, where to eat, where the night goes and how to see the port from the water. When you are ready to book, browse our Marbella restaurants and Marbella nightlife collections.

The story

How Puerto Banús began

The marina was the idea of developer José Banús, who built it with architect Noldi Schreck as part of the wider Nueva Andalucía project. It has been in service since 1970.

The opening party that year is still part of local legend: more than 1,500 guests, among them Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco and a young Julio Iglesias.

The idea was a Mediterranean village with Andalusian character, which is why the white, low-rise buildings around the water still feel more village than resort.

On the water

The marina in numbers

Most visitors only walk the quay, but the harbour itself is a serious working marina. The largest yachts moor on the Benabolá quay, where 11 of the 28 berths take 50-metre boats, and that is where the evening stroll happens.

915, for boats of 8 to 50 metres

More than 700,000 a year, according to the Junta de Andalucía

Where to eat

Restaurants in and around the port

The frontline restaurants on the quay are all about the view and the people-watching. A street or two back, and in Nueva Andalucía, you find some of the area’s best cooking.

On the quay

For a table facing the yachts, look at Leone, Jacks, Chow, Picasso and Mumtaz. They are busiest from 21:00, so book ahead in summer.

A few streets back

Ground, beneath the BREATHE complex, is a favourite for brunch. Paisana is in Nueva Andalucía, and Al Tanour serves Lebanese food close to the port.

Inside the clubs

Amaï, inside Ocean Club, turns a beach-club day into a proper lunch.

Shopping

Shopping in Puerto Banús

The quay and the streets right behind it are lined with international fashion and jewellery boutiques. Window-shopping here is half the fun.

For everything else, the El Corte Inglés department store sits at the entrance to the port, on Calle Ramón Areces.

From the water

See Banús from a yacht

The best view of the port is from the sea. A few hours on a motor yacht or catamaran, a swim stop along the coast and back to the quay for sunset is a classic Banús day.

Charters run from a few hours to full days, with skipper and crew. Prices depend on the boat, season and duration and are on request; our yacht charter guide explains what is included.

Where to stay

Staying in and near Puerto Banús

Stay in the port itself and everything is on foot. Nueva Andalucía, behind the port and up towards the golf valley, gives you more space and calmer nights, with Banús a short drive away. Our guide to Marbella’s most exclusive neighbourhoods compares the areas.

Insider tips

Tips for doing the port in style

  • Arrive for sunset. The light is best and the terraces fill up from about 19:00 in summer.
  • Book dinner and tables. Frontline restaurants and clubs sell out at weekends from June to September.
  • Dress up in the evening. Smart-casual works for dinner; clubs expect more. Beachwear stays at the beach.
  • Skip the car. Parking is hard in high season, so use a taxi or book a driver.
  • Come back in the morning. The quay is quiet before 11:00, the best time for photos of the yachts.
